To Take or Not to Take the CET-4 Speaking Test?

Introduction: The Debate Over the CET-4 Speaking Test The College English Test (CET), also known as the National English Test, is an important criterion for assessing students’ proficiency in English in China. For many years, the CET-4, which is aimed at testing college students’ English proficiency, has been divided into two parts: the written test and the listening test. However, in recent years, there has been a growing debate over whether the CET-4 Speaking Test should be a mandatory part of the exam. In this essay, I will examine the arguments for and against the CET-4 Speaking Test and present my own point of view.

Should the CET-4 Speaking Test Be Compulsory? Those who advocate the CET-4 Speaking Test argue that it is an essential part of the exam that can accurately assess students’ oral English proficiency. They contend that the skill of speaking is crucial in today’s globalized world, where English is the primary language of communication across borders. By including the CET-4 Speaking Test, they argue, the CET can better reflect the students’ actual English proficiency and help them prepare for future work and study. In addition, the Speaking Test can foster students’ confidence and skills to communicate in English in a real-life setting.

Against Making the CET-4 Speaking Test Mandatory On the other hand, opponents of the mandatory CET-4 Speaking Test maintain that it is unnecessary and burdensome, as many students are not good at speaking and may struggle with the exam. They argue that the CET-4 Written Test and Listening Test are enough to assess overall English proficiency, and that adding a Speaking Test could put undue pressure on students who are already burdened with the demands of their studies. Moreover, they argue that the Speaking Test may not be a fair evaluation of students’ potential for communication in English, and that it may be biased toward students who have had more opportunities to practice speaking the language.

Conclusion: My Point of View on the CET-4 Speaking Test After considering the pros and cons of the CET-4 Speaking Test, I believe that it should be made a compulsory part of the CET-4 exam for the following reasons. Firstly, as an essential part of English proficiency, speaking should be evaluated in the test to reflect the real needs of the students. Secondly, the Speaking Test will encourage students to develop their speaking skills and help them to become more confident and proficient in communicating in English. Finally, with the Speaking Test as a part of the CET-4 exam, students will be better prepared for their future work and study demands. Although it may be challenging for some students, the CET-4 Speaking Test is an important step towards a better educational system that accurately reflects students' abilities and needs.
